Israeli police arrest a man suspected of stealing $1.5 million from Saudi Arabia

Israeli police have arrested a man in the kingdom suspected of committing fraud, theft and money laundering, according to a statement posted on the Israeli government’s website.

The statement, issued on Sunday, did not name the man, who was arrested by Israeli authorities on Sunday afternoon in Riyadh.

The man was detained in the city of Jeddah, a suburb of the capital, Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia is a major economic hub for the United Arab Emirates, which hosts Israel’s biggest oil refinery, the world’s largest, and is home to the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group.

The UAE, which is one of the most generous countries in the Middle East, has taken a tough stance against Iran, accusing it of sponsoring terrorism.

The arrest comes days after the Israeli Defense Ministry said it was investigating the theft of $1 billion from the Saudi Arabian state.
